A scale ruler works on paper because the print is at a known size. On screen, zoom makes physical rulers meaningless — the same wall is 3 cm or 30 cm depending on your zoom level. The reliable way to measure a drawing on screen is to tell the software the drawing’s scale once, and let it do the arithmetic on every measurement.
That’s all a takeoff tool’s scale system is: a scale ruler that can’t be misread. Declare 1:100, or click both ends of a dimension you know, and from then on every length, area and count is in metres or feet — whatever the drawing was drawn in.

Common questions
- What scale is my drawing?
- Check the title block — it is usually stated (e.g. “1:100 @ A1”). If the sheet was printed or scanned at a different size than stated, calibrate from a figured dimension instead; that is always correct.
- Can I use it on a photographed drawing?
- Yes. A photo has no declared scale, so calibrate against one known dimension and measure from there. Keep the camera square-on for best accuracy.
- Metric and imperial?
- Both — measure a metric drawing and read results in feet, or the other way round. Units are switchable at any time.
