    Bottom-right of most sheets you'll find a ratio like 1:50, 1:100 or 1:200 (or 1/4" = 1'-0" on imperial drawings). Note it, but treat it as a claim about the original printed sheet, not about the file in front of you.

    A scale bar is drawn on the sheet, so it shrinks and grows with the drawing. If the PDF has been resized, exported oddly or scanned, the bar is still correct while the stated ratio isn't. Prefer it.

    A dimension line reading 5400, a structural grid at 6 m, a door leaf at 900 — anything with a real length written next to it works as a calibration reference. Longer is more accurate.

  • Trust order: scale bar → labelled dimension → stated ratio. Only the last one is broken by resizing.
  • A stated ratio is exact when the PDF is still at a true paper size (A0–A4, ANSI, Arch) — that's why detection reports higher confidence in that case.
  • No scale, no bar, no dimensions? Use a known standard: a door leaf is often 0.9 m, a brick course 75 mm.
  • Always verify against a second known dimension before you take off a whole sheet.
