2. Identify the drawing scale

Look for a scale such as 1:50 or 1:100, plus any warning that the drawing must not be scaled. A scale bar is helpful because it changes size with the page, whereas a printed ratio becomes unreliable if the PDF has been resized during scanning or export.

Do not assume every viewport on a sheet uses the same scale. Main plans, enlarged rooms and details can each have separate scales even when they appear on one PDF page.

Select two endpoints of a clearly written dimension, then enter its real length. Use a long dimension where possible—10,000 mm is generally less sensitive to a small cursor-placement error than a 600 mm doorway.

Choose endpoints with sharp, unambiguous intersections. Avoid dimension text that refers to gridlines or structural centres unless you can place both calibration points on those exact references.

4. Verify the calibration

Measure a second labelled dimension elsewhere on the same viewport. A 7,500 mm check should return approximately 7.50 m, subject only to sensible cursor tolerance.

How do you calculate flooring waste from measured area?

Order quantity = net measured area × (1 + waste percentage)

For 27.20 m² with a 7% allowance:

Waste is not universal. Straight-lay carpet tiles may require a different allowance from large-format porcelain laid diagonally, sheet vinyl with welded seams or timber boards requiring colour selection.
