How to measure area on a PDF plan
Quick answer
Set the drawing scale, then trace the outline of the space with the area tool — it gives you the area and perimeter in real units. Deduct large openings by measuring them as a separate area, group into conditions with waste, and export.
Area take-off — floor finishes, ceilings, painting, tiling — is one of the most common measurements you'll make. On a PDF it's quick and accurate once the scale is set.
This guide covers measuring a room, a whole floor plate, and handling openings.
Step by step
- 1
Set the scale first
Area only means something once the page is scaled. Use a ratio preset if the PDF is true paper size, or draw over a known dimension to calibrate.
- 2
Create an area condition
Make a condition such as "Floor finish" or "Ceiling area", with a waste % if you want an allowance for cutting.
- 3
Trace the outline
With the area tool, click each corner of the space and close the shape back to the start. The area (and perimeter) show live in real units as you go.
- 4
Handle openings and exclusions
For large voids or areas to exclude (stair cores, atria), measure them as a separate "deduct" area and subtract, or keep them as their own condition so they're visible and auditable.
- 5
Add waste and review
Set the waste percentage and check the raw vs with-waste totals. Colour-code conditions so overlapping areas stay readable.
- 6
Export the areas
Export a CSV of the areas (and perimeters) for your estimate, or an annotated PDF showing the measured outlines and totals.
Tips & gotchas
- •Trace to the inside face of walls for floor finishes; check whether your spec measures gross or net.
- •Perimeter comes free with an area measurement — handy for skirting or edge trim off the same outline.
- •Keep deductions as their own condition so reviewers can see what was removed.
- •Zoom in at corners for a tighter, more accurate outline.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure floor area from a PDF?
Set the scale, then use the area tool to trace the room outline and close it — the tool reports the area (and perimeter) in real units. Group areas into conditions and export.
Can I get the perimeter as well as the area?
Yes — area measurements report the perimeter too, so you can reuse the same outline for skirting or edge trim.
How do I deduct openings or voids?
Measure the opening as a separate area and subtract it, or keep it as its own condition so the deduction is visible and checkable.
What units can I use?
Metric (mm, cm, m) or imperial (in, ft); areas display in the unit you choose, e.g. m². It's free to measure area on Solid Takeoff's free plan.
